The most romantic getaway in Nova Scotia, Canada
Looking for a romantic getaway in Nova Scotia, Canada?
Or maybe you’re asking: Is Nova Scotia romantic?
My answer is yes. With over 13 thousand kilometres (8077 miles) of coastline, this eastern province gives new meaning to the phrase “long walks on the beach.”
And I’ve found a dreamy beach resort in Nova Scotia that’s just the place for a couple’s vacation.
Picture a cozy treehouse, the soothing sound of ocean waves and a crackling fire – – all combined with a splash of sparkling wine. That’s the experience I had at the White Point Beach Resort on the Nova Scotia south shore.

About White Point Beach Resort in Nova Scotia
The White Point Beach Resort is an easy 1.5 hour drive from Halifax. It sits on 300 acres of oceanfront property on Nova Scotia’s south shore.
The resort wasn’t always this size. It was first built in 1928 as a hunting and fishing lodge. It expanded over time, always maintaining the original rustic split-log construction of its buildings.
There’s a friendly and comfortable atmosphere. No doubt it has to do with Nova Scotia’s reputation for hospitality. It’s the kind of place where guests return year after year. Some are looking to relax or to get active on the water or the hiking trails.
Stay in an oceanfront treehouse for your romantic Nova Scotia getaway
If you’ve heard of White Point Beach Resort, you might be thinking it’s a family destination.
And it is. It has cottages, vacation homes and suites ideally suited for families or groups.
But, more recently, the Nova Scotia resort has built the perfect hideaways for a romantic escape.
If you’re looking for a glamping experience, you can stay in a geodesic dome, known as a “glome”. The glomes are private and immersed in nature along the shore of a freshwater lake on the property. They come with a barbeque and a private hot tub.
I find the cozy treehouses to be even more romantic because they’re by the ocean. They’re also in a secluded, adults-only spot on the property.
As you can see from the photo, the “treehouse” is not actually up in a tree. It’s a cabin on stilts nestled in the trees – – that’s what gives it a treehouse feel.
A little luxury in a treehouse
At first, the idea of a “treehouse” may not bring luxury to mind. But the cabin has a sumptuous king-size bed with fine cotton bedding and a down duvet, where I slept soundly to the sounds of the ocean.
I enjoyed the large rainshower in the bathroom, along with the fluffy bathrobes and luxurious bath products from Molten Brown.
There’s also a kitchenette with a mini-fridge, microwave, coffeemaker and kettle – – perfect for tea drinkers like me.
Why it’s perfect for a romantic getaway in Nova Scotia
To get the bliss started at our Nova Scotia couples’ retreat, I ordered a lovely charcuterie plate with a bottle of sparkling Nova Scotia rosé. It was a perfect way to relax on the balcony and get into the swing of things.
Frankly, I almost didn’t want to leave that spot. The room also has a propane fireplace to get cozy. In the evening, I kept the patio door open so we could hear both the ocean and the crackling fire.
From the balcony (or the bed), you can watching stunning sunsets and sunrises light up over the ocean.
The treehouse is just secluded enough that you’ll feel a world away.
Things to do at this Nova Scotia resort
Hit the beach
And now for the part about long walks on the beach.
The White Point Beach Resort has one kilometre of private shoreline– perfect for a romantic stroll, especially at sunset.
You can swim at the beach when the weather is really warm, or even take a surfing lesson. Keep in mind that this is the Atlantic ocean, so it will always be on the chilly side. (You can get cozy by the fire after your swim!)
Beach picnic
Of course, a beach picnic is always a good idea. The last bites of our charcuterie plate made for a tasty beach snack.
Hiking trails
I enjoyed the 2.5 kilometre looped trail on the property. It goes through the woods, across a footbridge and then meanders along the tidal estuary.
Along the trail, you can see wildflowers, birds (even herons and eagles) and lovely views. Just a note, don’t venture off the trail as there is poison ivy in the area (there are signs in certain areas).
Roast marshmallows
On most summer evenings at the White Point Beach Resort, there’s a bonfire and marshmallow roast at the oceanfront fire pit.
Because you’re never too old for roasted marshmallows.
Water activities
If you want to get out on the water, there’s a freshwater lake at the resort. It’s called Doggett’s Pond.
At the boathouse on the lake, you can sign out paddle boards, kayaks and row boats (included with your stay). They also have bicycles, beach toys and other recreational equipment. It’s open from the third weekend of May to the third weekend of October.
Spot the bunnies
The White Point Beach Resort is known for its resident colony of adorable bunnies.
You can get bunny food at the Front Desk or the Boat House and make some new furry friends.
Golf during your Nova Scotia weekend getaway
Golf isn’t my thing, but if it’s yours, there’s a picturesque nine-hole golf course at the resort.
The course sits on sixty acres of land alongside the Atlantic Ocean. I might consider golfing just for the views.
Try out the fitness and spa facilities
On the lower level of the main lodge at White Point, there’s an indoor pool, hot tub and sauna. The outdoor pool is open seasonally.
And if you’re up for some gamesmanship, there are two pickleball courts on the grounds.
After your workout, check out the Ocean Spa which offers treatments like massage, body wraps, Reiki and facials.
Enjoy live music
Every evening in the Founder’s Lounge at the resort, you can catch live, local entertainment.
It runs from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. and there’s no cover charge for resort guests.
It’s a romantic getaway in Nova Scotia. Just relax.
As you can see, there’s a lot you can do at the resort.
But, in my view, it’s a great place to relax, especially if you’re seeking a romantic couples retreat.
What is there to do nearby?
It might sound strange that I’m suggesting that you visit a garden centre, but bear with me.
Cosby’s Garden Centre in nearby Liverpool is worth a visit because it’s filled with amazing concrete sculptures by a Nova Scotia artist. Behind the garden centre, there’s a sizeable wooded garden filled with more sculptures. Honestly, I didn’t quite get it until I saw it. The way the sculptures are placed in harmony with nature is unusual and striking.
If you want to explore some other beaches in the area, you may want to stop by Summerville Beach Provincial Park, known for its wide sandy beach backed by sand dunes. A local favourite is Carter’s Beach which has Caribbean-like turquoise water (but not the same water temperature as the Caribbean).
For more hiking options in the area, check out this list, prepared by the resort.
Dining at White Point
You have two restaurant choices at your Nova Scotia accommodations.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in Elliot’s Dining Room in the main lodge. The menu includes local specialties like Digby scallops with a side of ocean views. It’s a good idea to make reservations in advance.
The Founder’s Lounge offers a “Munchie Menu” from noon to 9 p.m. Try a flatbread sandwich or the fish and chips, and, if the weather is nice, grab a table on the balcony overlooking the beach.
During the summer months, you can also get ice cream, a milkshake or snacks at “Scoops” at the boat house.
When is the best time to visit Nova Scotia?
Mid-June was a fantastic time for a romantic Nova Scotia getaway at White Point, especially since the lupines were blooming.
But you can enjoy the resort any time of the year.
If you go later in the summer or early fall, the sea water is warmer for swimming.
In October, you’ll get brilliant fall colours.
The ocean doesn’t freeze up here, so what could be more romantic than a brisk beach stroll and then cozying up by the fire in winter?
How to get to White Point Beach Resort
White Point Beach Resort is 152 kilometeres (95 miles) southwest of Halifax.
It’s easy to get there. Take Route 103 and exit 20A. Turn right onto Route 3 and follow it to the resort.
Things to do on the Nova Scotia south shore
If you’re looking for more than a weekend getaway in Nova Scotia, you can make a week of it by visiting other highlights along the south shore.
Be sure to see Canada’s most famous lighthouse at Peggy’s Cove. You can catch the sunset at Peggy’s Cove and then stay in the nearby Oceanstone Seaside Resort.
Be sure to spend a couple of days in Lunenburg. It’s a charming town and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Enjoy local seafood and share a sip at Ironworks Distillery. A romantic spot to stay is the Sail Inn, a turn-of-the-century inn just steps away from the waterfront.
Enjoy your romantic Nova Scotia vacation!
